How to Convert Sony HIF Files to JPG
To convert Sony .HIF files to JPG, open them in Sony's free Imaging Edge Desktop, edit if needed, then export to JPEG. .HIF is simply Sony's file extension for HEIF stills (the same underlying format as Apple's .HEIC, but written by Sony Alpha cameras, not iPhones). If you would rather not install software, an in-browser converter turns a .HIF straight into a shareable JPEG in seconds.

Why your Sony files are .HIF, not JPEG
When a Sony Alpha body is set to shoot HEIF, it saves 10-bit stills with a .HIF extension instead of .JPG. Sony's own documentation puts HEIF's compression efficiency at "about twice higher than that of JPEG" at comparable quality, which is the whole point of the format: more colour depth in a smaller file. The downside is that most browsers, upload forms, and older apps cannot read .HIF, so you need a JPEG to actually share or publish. Bodies that shoot HEIF include the a7 IV, a7R V, Alpha 1, and a9 III, along with the a7S III that introduced it.
Convert with Sony Imaging Edge Desktop
Imaging Edge Desktop is Sony's own free converter and the authoritative path:
- In the Viewer, the first time you open a
.HIFfile, go to Help → Activate HEIF Extension and enter your camera's serial number. This is a one-time step per camera body. - Select your
.HIFfiles and open them in Edit. - Export and choose JPEG. JPEG output is 8-bit; export to TIFF (16-bit) instead if you want to preserve the full 10-bit gradation for further editing.
The faster route: convert in one step
If you do not have Sony's software to hand, Mochify's HIF to JPG converter accepts .HIF files from any Sony Alpha body directly. Describe what you want in plain English and Magic Flow applies the settings for you, for example: "convert these Sony HIF files to JPG" or "convert to JPG and strip location data". You can do up to 3 files per session with no account needed.
